Malachi Bible Study: We See Snapshots, God Sees the Big Picture

I just finished studying the book of Malachi, and I have to say, for such a short book, it certainly packs a punch.
It is filled with nuggets of truth and wisdom for our daily walk with God. The kind of truth that makes you pause, underline, think, pray, and then whisper, “Lord, help me live this out.”

One of the things that stood out to me most from this Malachi Bible study is this:
We see snapshots. God sees the big picture.
Isn’t that the truth?
We see one moment.
One conversation.
One disappointment.
One unanswered prayer.
One confusing season.
But God sees the whole story from beginning to end.
Malachi Bible Study: A Message for God’s People
The book of Malachi is the last book of the Old Testament, and it carries a strong message. God is speaking to His people about their hearts, their worship, their faithfulness, and their relationship with Him.
There is warning in Malachi. There is correction. There is the reality that God’s judgment is coming against His enemies.
But here is what stopped me.
God’s people are not called to sit around obsessing over everyone else’s fate. They are called to examine their own hearts and pay attention to their relationship with Him.
Ouch.
Because let’s be honest. It is often easier to look around and wonder what God is doing in someone else’s life, or in the world around us, than it is to ask, “Lord, how is my heart with You?”
That is where Malachi landed for me.
It reminded me that my first concern should not be everyone else’s story. My first concern should be my walk with God.
God Sees the Big Picture
There are times in life when we only see a small piece of what God is doing.
We see the delay, but not the preparation.
We see the closed door, but not the protection.
We see the hard season, but not the shaping.
We see the question, but not yet the answer.
And because we only see the snapshot, we can become discouraged, frustrated, impatient, or even fearful.
But God is never confused.
He is not trying to figure things out as He goes along. He is not surprised by the state of the world. He is not caught off guard by what is happening in our lives.
God has a program, a plan, and a purpose that we cannot always see.
We see snapshots.
God sees the big picture.
Malachi 3:1 Points Us to Hope
In the middle of Malachi’s warnings and correction, God gives a promise.
“Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me.”Malachi 3:1
What a beautiful reminder.
God was already preparing the way for the Messiah.
Before the people could fully understand what was coming, God was working. Before they could see the fullness of His plan, He was moving. Before the silence between the Old and New Testaments, God had already spoken hope.
He had not forgotten His people.
He had not abandoned His promise.
He had not lost control of the story.
And He has not abandoned us either.
A Daily Walk of Trust
This is what I am taking away from my Malachi Bible study:
My job is not to figure everything out.
My job is not to understand every detail of God’s timing.
My job is not to compare my story with someone else’s or spend my days worrying about what God is doing in the lives of others.
My part is to stay close to Him.
To trust His timing.
To keep my heart tender.
To let Him correct me where I need correction.
To worship Him sincerely.
To walk faithfully, even when I only see one small piece of the picture.
That sounds simple, doesn’t it?
But living it out requires daily surrender.
Stay Close to Him
Maybe you are in a season right now where life feels confusing.
Maybe you are wondering why God has not answered yet.
Maybe you are looking around at the world and asking, “Lord, what are You doing?”
I understand.
But Malachi reminds us that God is still at work, even when His work is not immediately visible to us.
He sees what we cannot see.
He knows what we do not know.
He is faithful in ways we may only understand later.
So today, I am reminding myself of this truth:
Stay close to Him.
When the picture feels unclear, stay close.
When the timing feels slow, stay close.
When your heart feels weary, stay close.
When you only see the snapshot, trust the God who sees the whole picture.
A Prayer from Malachi
Lord, keep my heart close to You.
When I am tempted to focus on everyone else, bring my eyes back to You. When I am discouraged by what I cannot see, remind me that You see the whole picture. Help me trust Your timing, Your plan, and Your faithfulness.
Shape my heart. Strengthen my faith. Teach me to walk with You one step at a time.
Amen.
