Conquering the Waves of Life: How My Faith Became My Anchor Through Addiction

Life can throw at us challenges that often feel like relentless storms. In my personal journey, I've encountered tempests of various forms—addiction, betrayal, illness—and without a sturdy anchor, I found myself at risk of being swept away by their overwhelming force. Reflecting on my experiences, I've come to appreciate how my faith has served as my unwavering anchor amidst life's most turbulent waves.



I've drawn inspiration from voices like Jodi Howe, my guest on Out of the Darkness (ep 66), the woman behind "The Air That I Breathe" podcast, and the author of a book by the same name. She sheds light on her journey of overcoming addiction, facing betrayal, and battling illness. Her story isn't just a testament to her resilience and a beacon of hope for anyone seeking solace and strength in their faith.



It's important to acknowledge life's universal struggles. Jodi aptly says, "We live in a broken world, and it's tough out there." She emphasizes the importance of authenticity in our trials, "It's okay if you have a bad day, a bad week, a bad month... as women of Christ, do not watch us and say, huh, they got it all together." This level of honesty is refreshing and necessary, especially within the context of the church, where such topics are often shrouded in silence.

Spiritual practices have also played a significant role in my journey. "In the quiet moments when the world fades away, the journey towards peace continues," I've learned that the route may be slow but paved with hope and practical strategies. My daily routine now includes making healthier choices, devotionals, dedicated prayer time, and reducing digital distractions—all while emphasizing the need for spiritual discipline and the promise of a peaceful harbor ahead.


A scripture that has offered me great comfort is Psalm 34:17-18, which says, "The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." This verse offers solace to those facing difficulties, encapsulating the central message—that faith can be the lifeline we desperately need when facing life's storms.


In a world where approximately 264 million people of all ages suffer from depression, as per the World Health Organization, conversations like this are more critical than ever. The church has an opportunity to become a haven for healing, acknowledging the complexities of pain and providing a space where testimonies are shared and the light is shone on the darkness.
