Unwrapping the True Meaning of Easter: Beyond Chocolate Eggs and Fuzzy Bunnies

Happy Easter!

Easter isn’t about chocolate eggs or fuzzy bunnies—those are fun, but the real reason we celebrate is way more powerful. Easter is about the biggest, most incredible event in all of history.

Stone tomb, open with a sunrise and cross visible at the front of the tomb. Easter lilies in different colors.
Easter—He is no longer dead, HE IS RISEN!

Sometimes, we Christians use words that sound complicated or confusing. And let’s be honest: We don’t always explain things clearly. So, let’s keep it simple.

Here’s what Easter is really about:

On Good Friday, Jesus died.

On Easter Sunday, He came back to life.

But why did He die? And why does it matter?

Because we all mess up. We all make bad choices and do things we know are wrong. The Bible calls this sin—and sin separates us from God. (Romans 3:23)

And there’s a consequence for that—death. Not just physical death, but spiritual separation from God. (Romans 6:23)

But God didn’t want that to be the end of our story.

So Jesus stepped in. Imagine being in a courtroom, waiting for your sentence, and suddenly someone walks in and says, “I’ll take the punishment. Let them go.” That’s what Jesus did. (Isaiah 53:5)

He took our place. He took the punishment we deserved because He loves us more than we can imagine. (John 3:16)

That’s what happened on the cross.

And three days later, Jesus rose from the dead! (1 Corinthians 15:3–4)

He beat death. He proved that love is stronger than sin, and life is stronger than the grave. Because of what He did, we can now be close to God again. (Hebrews 4:16)

We’re no longer alone. We’re no longer stuck.

We’re forgiven. Free. Loved.

How amazing is that?

That’s what Easter means to me.

That’s why I follow Jesus.

I see a lot of these "Jesus didn't die for chocolate" articles. Let's present the facts: Easter is the festival of the Angli-Saxon goddess Eostre (goddess of rebirth and spring). Bunnies and eggs are associated with Eostre because Spring brought sightings on March Hares (bunnies) and skylark eggs (laid in fields and erroneously thought to have been laid by the Hares).

Christianity usurped the festival of Eostre (similar to usurping the Yule festival as Christmas) as it was easier to usurp and gradually change the existing pagan festivals than stop them. Thus the pagan festivals became Christian festivals. Eostre becomes Easter. BUT many of the pagan traditions remain - for Easter that means bunnies and eggs.

So if Christians want…
